Race Preview
This will be the IZOD IndyCar Series' sixth visit to Iowa Speedway, the series has been at the track every year since it's gates opened in September 2006.
Iowa Speedway is a 7/8-mile (1.4 km) paved oval motor racing track in Newton, Iowa, United States, approximately 30 miles (48 km) east of Des Moines. The track was designed with influence from Rusty Wallace and patterned after Richmond International Raceway, a short track where Wallace was very successful. It's is banked around the full circuit, the turns are between 12°-14°, the frontstretch is at 10°, and the backstrech at 4°. It has over 25,000 permanent seats as well as a unique multi-tiered Recreational Vehicle viewing area along the backstretch.
In both 2007 and '09, the Scottish driver Dario Franchitti won both the race in Iowa and the championship. In 13 seasons, seven drivers have won the eighth race of the season and also won the championship. In 2008, the race was won by English man Dan Wheldon, and 2010 year the winner was Brazilian Tony Kanaan, who at the time was a driver for Andretti Autosport, who won again in 2011, but this time with Marco Andretti.
