James James Crashes in Practice 2 for Vegas Final
Oct 15th 2011
In Practice 2 James Jakes was involved in a major incident that happened very early in the session, when suspension failure sent James into the wall at turn 2. It was a hard impact and there was black smoke coming from the #18 Acorn Stairlifts car, prompting Jakes to extricate himself even before the car came fully to a halt on track: within seconds the wreckage was on fire, and was badly damaged before the fire was put out.
James' quick action meant he has been released and cleared to drive, but his team has a lot of work to do after the oil fire.
James tweeted earlier: "Thanks for all the kind messages, got some burns on my back and butt cheeks, but OK"
The Dallara chassis was certainly burned beyond repair and will not make it to the official 'retirement party' of the eight-year-old model on Sunday. Dale Coyne Racing is now evaluating what to do for Sunday's race, as the backup car is essentially in pieces at this stage.
The mechanical failure led to James not being able to participate in qualifying, which started only 45 minutes after the end of practice.
