James Joins ART | 28 Nov 2007

Teams to use name ART in future : -

With the merger of the F3 Euroseries championship winning team ASM, with two time champions in the GP2 series, ART back in February of 2007, it can now be confirmed that both teams will race under the ART banner effective immediately.

With ART Grand prix winning the GP2 crown in the first two years in the sports history and ASM having an extraordinary record in F3, including multiple championships in the Euroseries and International events, the culmination of these two great entities will make a stronger force and adopting just one name was a necessary progression.

Frédéric Vasseur:

“To use two different names, ASM and ART, for the same company, with the same people working …  [READ]

Hockenhiem Race 2 Report | 16 Oct 2007

James Jakes had a disappointing end to his first year in the F3 Euro Series when he retired from the final race after charging through the field at Hockenheim.

The British driver had started the race towards the back of the field due to his retirement from the first race of the weekend, and he had passed several cars in the early stages before an attempt to make another pass went wrong in the stadium section.

“It was my mistake, I was just too optimistic,” said a philosophical Jakes. “It’s been a disappointing way to end the season, because these races don’t reflect the year we’ve had.”

Jakes could at least take some consolation from his top-five finish in the championship, and the …  [READ]

Hockenheim Race 1 Report | 15 Oct 2007

James Jakes missed out on points in the penultimate race of the F3 Euro Series season after a dramatic collision while trying to snatch eighth position in the closing stages.

The British driver had worked his way back into contention for a top eight finish after he lost ground at the start of the race, and after chasing down Dani Clos for several laps, Jakes was caught out by the Spaniard’s early braking point, and he ran into the back of him.

The collision brought an end to the 20-year-old’s recovery drive, which would have earned him pole position for Sunday’s race if he had been able to get ahead of Clos.

“It was my mistake really, I just got caught out by …  [READ]

Hockenhiem Qualifying Report | 15 Oct 2007

James Jakes has set his sights on a double points haul from the final weekend of the F3 Euro Series season after qualifying eighth at Hockenheim.

The British driver, who had been one of the pacesetters during Friday morning’s practice session, was disappointed with his qualifying effort, but he believes that he will be a contender at the front of both races this weekend.

“Eighth is ok, but we lost a bit of time to everyone compared to the morning,” said Jakes. “We just didn’t seem to get the best out of the tyres.”

The 20-year-old is in prime position to take advantage of the reverse grid rule for the second race of the weekend, where the top eight finishers from race one …  [READ]

Organisers of the prestigious Macau Formula Three Grand Prix have confirmed several of the top drivers that will be competing in the event this year.

Front-runners from the three major F3 championships in the world will be present, and the grid will definitely feature the champions from Britain and the F3 Euro Series.

British F3 champion Marko Asmer will take part in the event for the third time, while Euro Series title contenders Romain Grosjean and Sebastien Buemi are both confirmed for the event.

Buemi will partner Senna at Raikkonen Robertson though, …  [READ]

Barcelona Race 2 Report | 24 Sep 2007

A trip through the gravel robbed James Jakes of a podium finish in the second F3 Euro Series race of the weekend at Barcelona.

The British driver had moved into second place from his starting position of fourth on the first lap, but as he tried to apply pressure on race leader and eventual winner Renger van der Zande, he went off at the first corner.

There was still a chance of points for Jakes though, but he lost out at the same corner later in the race to championship contender Sebastien Buemi, who took the final point in sixth place.

“It’s really disappointing, because we were heading for a great result,” said Jakes. “But it was my mistake. I was pushing too …  [READ]

Barcelona Race 1 Report | 24 Sep 2007

James Jakes clawed his way through the F3 Euro Series field to score a top five finish in the first race of the weekend at Barcelona.

The British driver had started in the middle of the field due to an accident in qualifying, but he made his way through the order in treacherous conditions to move back into fourth place in the prestigious championship.

Jakes made the majority of his places up at the start, as he found traction while several of his rivals struggled to control wheelspin on the soaked track.

He made his way past Edoardo Piscopo under braking for Turn 1 to snatch sixth place on lap 10, and although championship leader Romain Grosjean was able to take the place …  [READ]

Barcelona Qualifying Report | 24 Sep 2007

James Jakes will start Saturday’s F3 Euro Series race in Spain from 13th after a high-speed accident prevented him from challenging for pole position in qualifying.

The British driver had been fourth fastest in the morning practice session, but he missed out on the best conditions in qualifying, as the majority of the field set their fastest laps at the end of the session.

Jakes will not be the only frontrunner with work to do in the first race of the weekend, as championship contenders Romain Grosjean and Sebastien Buemi will also start just outside of the top 10.

However, the 20-year-old is confident that he can still salvage something from the weekend, and he has promised to go all-out to fight his …  [READ]

Mercedes welcome VW challenge | 11 Sep 2007

Mercedes-Benz believe that Volkswagen’s return to Formula Three is good for the category which they have dominated in recent years.

Volkswagen’s engine scored points on its debut at the Nurburgring last weekend, and despite its speed trap figures being a couple of kilometres per hour down on the Mercedes, the engine impressed many people in the paddock.

While Volkswagen’s motorsport director Kris Nissen has said that they want to power six cars next year, Mercedes have said that they have no objection to some teams switching engines.

“We have too many teams at the moment,” Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss Norbert Haug told autosport.com. “It’s under control, but we are just stretched out a little bit.

“We have no problem if some teams switch, it’s an …  [READ]

MANOR MOTORSPORT NURBURGRING RACE NOTES | 04 Sep 2007

British sensation James Jakes and Dutchace Yelmer Buurman both enjoyed points-scoring finishes for Manor Motorsport at the Nurburgring over the weekend, 1st/2nd September, during rounds 13 and 14 of the Formula 3 Euroseries season respectively.

Following a lengthy five-week break since the previous two rounds of the campaign, the exception being the stand-alone BP Ultimate Masters event at Zolder which saw Chinese driver Cheng Cong Fu replace Swiss starlet Cyndie Allemann in the Manor camp, hopes were high for a strong outing this weekend at the famous German venue.

Saturday’s 29-lap race proved to be a bittersweet event for the Dinnington squad as while Jakes raced to a strong fourth place finish, Buurman saw a potential points haul ripped from his grasp …  [READ]

Nurburgring Race Report Round 14 | 03 Sep 2007

James Jakes was left disappointed at the Nurburgring on Sunday as he missed out on a point by one place in the second F3 Euro Series race of the weekend.

The 20-year-old started the race from fifth position, but he dropped two places at the start and then remained in seventh place in a race that featured very little overtaking.

However, the weekend’s results mean that the British driver is only five points adrift of third place in the championship with three double-header rounds remaining.

“Overall it’s not been the worst weekend, we had good pace on Saturday, but we could have done with a couple of points in the second race,” said Jakes.

“My start wasn’t very good though, and when we got …  [READ]

Nurburgring Race Report Round 13 | 03 Sep 2007

James Jakes narrowly missed out on a podium finish in Saturday’s F3 Euro Series race at the Nurburgring.

The British was one of four drivers that had a clear edge over the rest of the field, but despite several attacks in the closing laps he was unable to force a way past Edoardo Piscopo for a third place finish.

Jakes had started from fourth positon, and in the early part of the race he put serious pressure on championship contender Sebastien Buemi. However, Buemi was eventually waved through by his teammate Piscopo, who was able to hold Jakes off to the flag.

“We were all over Buemi and then the tyres went off,” said Jakes. “Then I had quite a few moments behind …  [READ]

Nurburgring Qualifying Report | 03 Sep 2007

James Jakes has qualified on the second row of the grid for the opening F3 Euro Series race of the weekend at the Nurburgring.

The British driver was happy with his performance on his first visit to the famous German circuit, although he believes that he could have achieved more in the session.

The temperatures in the Eifel region of Germany have been low so far this weekend, which has made it difficult for the drivers and teams to get their tyres up to operating temperature.

Jakes appeared to be in the running for pole position during the early part of the session, but his efforts were hampered when he was called in by officials for a random check at the weighbridge when …  [READ]

James Jakes emerged from the 11th and 12th rounds of the 2007 Formula 3 Euroseries at Zandvoort in the Netherlands over the weekend, 28th/29th July, as Manor Motorsport’s most consistent driver; a brace of points-scoring results seeing the Yorkshire teenager retain fourth position in the championship standings.

During Saturday’s qualifying session it was hometown hero Yelmer Buurman who looked set to have the biggest impact of all four Manor drivers after posting the third fastest time with a lap of 1m 32.687 seconds, a career-best F3 Euroseries performance although he felt it could have been even better but for yellow flags on his final lap.

French team-mate Franck Mailleux, heading into the weekend with the lead in the ‘Rookie’ standings produced the …  [READ]

Zandvoort Round 12 Race Report | 30 Jul 2007

James Jakes came through a chaotic F3 Euro Series race at Zandvoort to finish in sixth position on Sunday.
The British driver had started the race from pole position, but his start was hampered by a snapped handbrake and he slipped back to fourth position off the line.
The 19-year-old then held off a fierce challenge from championship leader Romain Grosjean for several laps, but the Frenchman was eventually able to get past.
Jakes was then the first of the frontrunners to switch to wet tyres as the rain began to fall, and it was only a spin shortly after he came out of the pits that robbed him of a podium finish.
The Manor Motorsport driver then picked up several places as he …  [READ]

Zandvoort Round 11 Roundup | 30 Jul 2007

James Jakes will start Sunday’s F3 Euro Series race at Zandvoort from pole position after he made his way up to eighth in the first race on Saturday.
The 19-year-old, who had been third fastest in free practice, was disappointed to only qualify 10th on the grid, but he is confident that he has the speed to take advantage of his starting position for race two.
After making up ground at the start of the race, Jakes was then stuck behind a train of cars, but towards the end of the race he set the third-fastest lap when he had some clear track.
“It’s great that we’ve got that speed, it means that we should be able to make use of pole position …  [READ]

Zandvoort Qualifying | 30 Jul 2007

James Jakes will start Saturday’s F3 Euro Series race at Zandvoort from 10th position after his qualifying efforts were badly affected by yellow flags.
The 19-year-old had been third fastest in Friday morning’s free practice session, but he did not get the chance to repeat that performance in qualifying as several cars went off the circuit, hampering his session.
“The yellow flags were out each time I had new tyres on,” said Jakes, “and by the time they had gone I had lost the best of my tyres.
“It’s a real shame, because I wanted to get back into third in the championship this weekend. It’s still possible, but we are not where we should be.”
Jakes will only have to make up two …  [READ]

MUGELLO RACE REPORT | 16 Jul 2007

James Jakes made his way up from ninth on the grid to finish fourth in the first F3 Euro Series race at Mugello on Saturday and maintain his third position in the championship.

The 19-year-old had expected his race pace to be stronger than his qualifying position suggested, and he immediately made his way up to fifth place at the start as several cars around him collided with each other.

“I got a good start and there was a bit of trouble in front of me, which I was expecting,” said Jakes. “I was going to go to the outside, but I changed my mind and it paid off. If I had gone to the outside I would have been in the …  [READ]

FIRST WIN FOR JAKES | 03 Jul 2007

An exciting second F3 race at the French Grand Prix weekend saw a maiden win for Britain’s James Jakes.

The second race of the weekend saw all the overtaking and incident that was largely missing from the first one.

A raft of penalties changed the expected order of the grid and left Jean-Karl Vernay on pole from Yelmer Buurman, James Jakes and Franck Mailleux.

At the start Edoardo Piscopo squeezed Cyndie Alleman and the pair tangled wheels before slamming into the unprotected wall on the right of the grid. It was a hefty smash but both walked away as the safety car was sent onto the track.

Vernay, Buurman and Jakes were the top three behind the safety car and that remained the order …  [READ]

JAKES TAKES MAIDEN WIN IN RACE TWO | 02 Jul 2007

James Jakes won his first race in the Formula 3 Euro Series for Manor Motorsport at Magny-Cours on Sunday, the Yorkshireman taking the win after a fraught 25-minute event.

Starting third on the reverse grid, Jakes lost a place to Manor teammate Franck Mallieux off the start, while a heavy shunt further back, between another Manor driver, Cyndie Alleman, and Mucke’s Edoardo Piscopo brought out the safety car for a lap.

At the restart, pole man Jean Karl Vernay (Signature) led away from Manor’s Yelmer Buurman, Mallieux and Jakes.

Jakes passed Mallieux with a smart move around the outside of the Adelaide hairpin, while Vernay and Buurman also briefly swapped the lead there.

Vernay stayed ahead until Buurman drove into the side of him …  [READ]
